My boo bear turned 2 months last saturday.
She's my 5th child that I've breastfed, so I know what breastfed poop is supposed to look and smell like, and it was wrong. It has been mucusy and thick, and it was suggested that she might have a dairy allergy. So I've been cutting out dairy- which for me is just milk and cheese. I had a couple of small cheese slip ups (like a grilled cheese sandwich) but I've been doing really good watching what I'm eating.
But her poop is just getting worse. She's going for longer periods of time between poops, and each one is stickier than the last. She finally pooped about an hour ago, but she hadn't 2 1/2 days. The last time she did it was the same consistincy of meconium.
The weird thing I was thinking today is that for the first month of her life, her poop was fine. She didnt' enjoy doing it and would scream about it, til she finally got it out, but it looked and smelled fine. And it's progressively gotten worse. It started with just a loogie looking part in it, then just got more and more mucusy each time she pooped, to the point where it is now- thick and sticky like peanut butter.
She's never ate really great, and I monitored her weight nightly for almost 3 weeks straight, but it seemed like she was gaining, just really slowly. She'd stay at the same weight for 3-5 days before she'd finally gain a couple of ounces. Then she'd lose one, gain one ... but still seemed like she was trending upward. I took her in for her first check up just over 3 weeks ago. She was 8 lbs, 6 oz, which her ped said was fine because they consider her initial weight loss after delivery (where she was at 7 lbs, 4 oz.)
So I got her into the ped today to talk about her poop. I know it takes time to clear our systems of dairy, but I wanted to see what he thought about the poop.
She was weighed completely naked today (unlike last time where she had a cloth diaper on).
However, he doesn't think there's anything wrong with HER. He thinks it's my milk. And wants me to put her on formula. He wants me to journal how much she takes in for the next week (of formula) and come back to have her reevaluated.
Here's a big part of what I don't understand. If her body isn't absorbing the nutrients in my breastmilk, how is it supposed to be able to absorb formula?
AND her poop WAS normal for 5-6 weeks, then it changed.... so far as i know my breastmilk hasn't changed.... yet her body suddenly can't absorb the nutrients anymore.
I called another ped for a second opinion, but can't get in to see him til the day before her next appt with our regular guy, and they can't give me any advice until he sees her.
I have a wet nurse on standby because I'd rather try that first to see if it's 7 or my milk, rather than give her formula.
I feel horrible.
Either there's something really wrong with my boo bear, or there's something really wrong with me.

The ped said that she's malnourished, and the reason for her poop is that her body isn't absorbing the nutrients from my breastmilk. However, he doesn't think there's anything wrong with HER.
