That being said, it's Friday, so this featured music will be a short lived one... which is probably good because it's not exactly a happy tune.
I don't know if it's just because I'm feeling overwhelmed, or crappy, or in so much pain, or depressed, or lonely.... I'm just really feeling this old tune.
The song is called
"Hurt"
the original artist was Nine Inch Nails, however Johnny Cash did a cover shortly before he passed away that I love just as much.
This is the Nine Inch Nails version (mostly keyboard): - WARNING- this one has the "s" word.
and this is the Johnny Cash version (more piano and acoustic guitar): ("s" word has been replaced)
Lyrics:
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
Chorus:
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns/("s")
Upon my liars chair
Full of broken thoughts
I can not repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here
Chorus
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
I love, love, love the Johnny Cash version of this song....I <3 all things Johnny Cash and this is one of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteThat's really cool, Danielle! I honestly never gave him a thought until that movie came out about him. Then I sought out a few of his songs to get an idea of what kind of music he sang. I think my grandmother probably liked him, even though he didn't sing gospel, the style was the same that she did enjoy, so it's a possibility!
ReplyDeleteI have to say too, that I am torn between which version I like better. I've read many comments on the videos who believe that Trent Reznor put more feeling into his version than Johnny Cash did, but I don't feel that to be true. Especially if you actually watch Cash's video and listen to the intense crescendo- I think Cash did put a lot of emotion into his version, perhaps he just didn't have the voice to make it sound like it.
